Early Spring — When Warmth Has Not Arrived, Yet Yang Has Begun

In early spring, the air may still feel cold .Yet something within has already begun to move.

In the ancient text Huangdi Neijing, it is written:

“The three months of spring are the time of renewal.”

Spring does not arrive suddenly as warmth. It begins quietly.

The earth softens .Light lingers a little longer .And within the body, a subtle upward movement awakens.

You may notice:

  • Clothes feel too tight

  • You no longer want to feel heavy or overly grounded

  • Your breath seeks more space

  • You feel the urge to walk, to open a window

This is not restlessness.

It is awakening.

Winter Holds. Spring Unfolds.

Winter invites conservation .Spring invites gentle expansion.

If we continue winter habits too long:

  • Heavy foods

  • Excessive warming herbs

  • Tight clothing

  • Emotional suppression

The rising energy may become trapped, turning into irritation or internal heat.

But if we open too quickly:

  • Dressing too lightly

  • Overexerting

  • Releasing energy too fast

The body may lose its protective balance.

Early spring asks for something subtler:

Soft expansion .

Rooted rising.

Warmth without excess.

A Gentle Shift in Diet

Early spring does not call for strong tonics. Nor does it call for cold detoxification.

Instead:

  • Lighter cooking instead of heavy stews

  • Warm vegetables rather than rich meats

  • A touch of sour to gather,

  • Mild sweetness to nourish digestion

Very warming substances may now feel oppressive .The body often knows before the mind does.

“Spring fatigue” is common —not because energy is low ,but because upward movement has begun while nourishment is still catching up.

Go to bed earlier. Allow moments of quiet .Let yin replenish what yang begins to lift.

Animals and Children Feel It First

You may notice small changes in:

  • Children

  • Pets

  • Sensitive individuals

Mild irritability .

Inflammation.

Restless sleep.

This is often the body’s way of clearing the old as new energy rises.

Do not rush to suppress it.

Offer space .

Offer sunlight.

Offer gentle movement.

When energy flows, balance returns.

Five Early-Spring Practices

🌿 Dress with freedom above, warmth below

🌿 Eat light, warm, and simple

🌿 Walk slowly and stretch the ribs

🌿 Rise slightly earlier, sleep undisturbed

🌿 Soften the heart — less striving, more allowance

Spring energy is inherently kind.

When followed, it feels easeful. When resisted, it feels congested.

A Final Reflection

Spring is not about excitement.

It is about life quietly choosing to rise again.

If lately you feel:

  • Less tolerant of restriction

  • Less interested in heaviness

  • Drawn toward light and air

That is not instability.

It is yang returning.

Do not force it upward.

Do not press it downward.

Simply give it space.

Roots remain in the earth.

Branches will naturally seek the light.
